Carol’s Story

From Overcome to Overcoming

Enough Rope tells the gripping story of Carol, a woman whose life shatters when her husband’s hidden gambling debts and questionable alliances come to light. Facing relentless media scrutiny and dealing with forces outside her control, Carol confronts a brutal reality of secrets that run deeper than she ever imagined. Her journey through grief, shame, and betrayal is compellingly human—a tale of survival when the rope seems too thin to hold. Will the support of her friends and daughters be enough? Can she protect them? As layers of deception and denial unravel, Carol must decide who she is without the person she thought she loved, and how she will redefine herself in the wreckage.

The Book’s Setting

Ybor City is an important part of the setting for Enough Rope. Ybor used to be the Cigar Capital and is still called Cigar City by the locals. The Visit Tampa Bay website says, “Visitors to Tampa Bay can make a side trip to Cuba without needing their passports. It is Tampa Bay Florida’s historic Latin Quarter, Ybor City.” The history, mystique, and character of the area add flavor and depth to the characters and story.

I have always been fascinated by the area. It reminds me of New Orleans with a Spanish twist. Maybe I’m just thinking of Mojitos. The Italians were also a part of this historic area. As a matter of fact, many of the Italians who settled in and around Ybor’s ‘Little Italy’ in the 1890s came through New Orleans to Tampa.

God Bless Billie Holiday

Soul deep blues song

Fluttered into her heart

On Iridescent wings.

Cause Mama had, Daddy had

Relatives with crust of bread

Wore the fragrance of accepted

Abuse in your hair to

Attract butterflies

Cause Mama had, Daddy had

Relatives with crusts of bread

Leave needle tracks of don’t deserve

Along strong arms that

Reach for the wrong love.

Cause Mama had, Daddy had

Relatives with crusts of bread

Served love at the crowded table,

Chrysalis dormant

Awaits a distinct song.

Cause Mama had; Daddy held

Crusts of bread

Swallowed too much

Strange fruit
